Honor Dogs - From Strays to Stars
We have started another exciting new program to increase our service to the community and rescue more abandoned dogs from shelters.
Honor Dogs is our collaboration with the Travis County Sheriff’s Office. Newly adopted shelter dogs live and train with minimum offense inmates at the Del Valle jail. In our pilot program, three dogs will live and train with two male inmates each. The dogs will learn the basics such as eye contact, name response, sit and down. The inmates also will socialize the dogs in a variety of settings on their 170 acre grounds and some field trips.
We will train both the corrections officers and the inmates in our positive reinforcement training methods. Eventually, the corrections officers and the experienced inmates will be able to train new inmates. This has the potential to significantly increase the number of dogs we rescue and train and the number of people we help.
26.2 for Stella Blue

The rescued dogs at THSD have been going the extra mile for 21 years. It’s time someone went the extra mile for them.

To that end, I’ll be running the Austin Marathon on Valentine’s Day, 2010 to raise awareness and funds for these guardian angels of the disabled. Please consider giving $1 or $2 per mile for this cause that saves a dog and a human at the same time.

I had a Hearing Dog for 13 years. Her name was Stella Blue. She alerted me to sounds such as the alarm clock, telephone, doorbell, smoke alarm, and people I couldn’t see. That alone was priceless. Add to that her undying devotion and affection, and you have the perfect recipe to forget your disability. Yes, there are vibrating alarm clocks that’ll rattle your bones in the morning, and yes, you can buy a flashing telephone that’ll light up your neighborhood; but a Hearing Dog is a whole lot more fun to pet.

I’ll be returning the favor on February 14, 2010, in memory of Stella Blue. Let’s rescue some dogs and humans together that day.

Use the form below to donate or pledge. You can either multiply your pledge by 26 miles, so $1 per mile = $26, or pledge a flat sum of whatever you want.
