Indie's Playlist
Nancy Browne had always lived with someone until her children moved away, leaving the hearing impaired former school teacher alone and anxious at times. Seeking to regain her independence, she applied to Service Dogs, Inc. for a Hearing Dog.
When Service Dogs, Inc. matched her with Indie, a demure Whippet mix adopted from San Antonio Animal Care Services, she opened the door for Nancy to a new world of independence and opportunity. Nancy now feels more comfortable living alone and empowered to navigate her community to run errands and see friends.
When we evaluated Indie at the shelter, she showed us that even though she was small, she could make a very large impact in the life of a Deaf person. Indie rapidly progressed in our training program, mastering advanced public behavior and sound alerts.
“She alerts me to the door bell, the microwave sounds, the coffee pot sounds, and even just the Amazon guy delivering a package,” said Nancy. “She alerts me by touching me to get my attention. Then she leads me to the sound. Having Indie is life changing for me.”
Status: We have moved Indie in with Nancy and they are completing three months of weekly In-home training in Nancy’s home and community.
